0.0.18 gets rid of the no-fuel softlock!

More pretty big changes this week, having to do with how fuel is used, what happens when you run out, and how your fuel use is scored:

  • There’s a mandatory manual at the end of level 1 if you don’t acquire another manual.
  • The manual now shows you a set of symbols in the dark.
  • There’s some actions you can take with the above, which work in the light and the dark.
  • What happens if you do the above: level eht tratser uoY.
  • Fuel wells now refill every 30 seconds, so if you can find your way back to a well, you won’t have to worry for long.
  • Fuel affects your score differently now. Each level has a “par” number of refills allowed to obtain a set bonus. If you come in at or under that value, you get a bonus; otherwise, no bonus, but no penalty. (Refills used to incur a penalty.)
  • Burning a well still counts as taking a refill, but the fire goes out some time before the well replenishes.

Fixed some visual things that made the game slightly less playable:

  • The camera returns to focus on the player much more smoothly now.
  • The well and small lamp sprites are a bit more distinct, I hope, as the oil surface of the well is more prominent.
  • The cane swipe animation now includes some motion lines to make it stand out against the dark colors of the floor and player sprite.

Finally, there’s some backend changes I made, which shouldn’t cause any changes to play, but could cause bugs:

  • I made it easier to force “page breaks” in text boxes, which helps pace some dialogue to better effect.
  • Renamed a bunch of things in the code, so that lamps are lamps (and not torches) for example.

The problem I was mainly focused on this week was, “Running out of fuel isn’t fun.” The answer was mostly, it seems, to make it easier to get your fuel back. Thanks for playing!
