v0.0.8 brings more power-up tweaks and menu polish!
This week's release features, most prominently, an updated menu system, along with some more reconsiderations on power-ups. There will certainly be more of both in the future. Here's the details.
The laser has been converted to an obstacle type
The laser power-up has now been converted, similar to how bomb was redone. Instead of firing a laser on match, you now drop a special obstacle type that fires a laser in a direction based on where you hit it! You get three shots, and each can be in a different direction. You can save them for when you really need them, or fire fast while you have the time.
Power-ups spawn logic is now [Random every seven matches]
Before, power-ups spawned on certain match-count intervals--unique by type. I think this was making things too predictable and boring. Now, you get a random power-up every seven matches. You still get to see what type ahead of time, which should help you plan.
I have in mind to tweak the randomness a bit so that you don't get useless power-ups, like time-stop in the seven-match slot. Let me know using the "Give Feedback" option in the menu if you find any bad power-up scenarios, and I'll try to make rules that keep them from happening.
Got rid of the black hole power-up
There was a power-up you could get for 50 matches, which let you eat obstacles, causing you to grow in size until you implode. With the new take on power-ups, as they relate to obstacles now, this felt out of place. I have eliminated this power-up from the rotation.
The menu now scrolls/spins horizontally
Special thanks to Wendy for the base idea on this! Basically, the menus make better use of the space by spinning horizontally now instead of vertically. I also added some smooth transitions when you hit left and right, sliding the menu entries into their correct places. I also added some supporting text for menu options and reworked a few pages to leverage the new system.
I'm especially happy with the menu changes, and excited to keep converting power-ups to get more obstacle types into the game. That's going to be at least part of the next update--I'm honestly not sure what else I'll get in for it. Thanks for playing, and have a good week!
